Alumni, current and former teachers and pastors, families and friends of Andrews Christian Academy recently came together to celebrate 100 years of Adventist education in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. The church and school were filled to capacity as friendships were renewed and memories were shared.
The focus for the weekend was “Educating for Eternity—It’s all about Jesus.” Former teacher Derral Reeve, who now serves as superintended of education for the Texico Conference, led out in a vespers service Friday evening. He shared stories and some school history, as well why he believes Adventist education is so important. Dennis Millburn, former student and recently retired treasurer of the Southern Union Conference, gave the message for the Sabbath worship service. His sermon title was “Becoming Like Little Children,” and he also shared stories and experiences from his time at the school. The Sabbath afternoon message was given by former teacher Peter Adams, who now serves as education program director for Union College. He shared his experiences and commitment to Adventist education, as well as how God has led in his life. The events concluded Saturday night with an enthusiastic alumni basketball game followed by an ice cream treat.
What a joy it was to reconnect and celebrate our Adventist educational heritage together! While strong academics are significant, it was evident that establishing relationships and a building strong foundation in Christ are vital to our Christian education experiences.
